Utility Computing, is also known as on-demand computing, or cloud computing. A Great Definition from wikipedia.org is as follows.

Utility Computing (also known as on-demand computing) is the packaging of computing resources, such as computation and storage, as a metered service similar to a physical public utility (such as electricity, water, natural gas, or telephone network). This system has the advantage of a low or no initial cost to acquire hardware; instead, computational resources are essentially rented. Customers with very large computations or a sudden peak in demand can also avoid the delays that would result from physically acquiring and assembling a large number of computers.

Very interesting and new concept for me. I think that it would not be a great idea to rent computer space and to be monitored would violate any right that you would have. They would be able to increase rates and would end up monopolized in certain areas. Not sure that this is something I would be interested in.

I'm not sure if were talking about the same type of monitoring here. We are speaking of monitoring in the sense of "gauging" or keeping an eye on the amount of resources used. Not actually the monitoring of your content. There is a big difference there.

There are so many reasons that utility computing is beneficial to people/companies that I think possibly aren't understood.

Are you talking about the electricity being measured at home from electronic meters. We are already having these facilities as gas, water and electricity all are measured by electric meters.
