Ok. So the subject around "these parts" is going green. Using less resources, and virtualization.

What has your datacenter done to "Go Green"?

Have you implemented virtualization? Reduced power? Implemented different "energy sparing" hardware?

We'd love to hear your stories.

The Four Ms for Improving Energy Efficiency in Data Centers
I thought it was interesting.

"The EPA's report points out the dramatic effect the growing usage of data centers will have on U.S. energy consumption if left unchecked," said AFCO CEO Michael Mallia. "Through our analysis and recommendations, we hope to help customers make their datacenters more energy efficient."

It is not my datacenter -- however, iMountain has taken many steps to "go green".

They draw a large majority of their power from solar panels on the roof of their facility.

Kudos to them, they are setting the bar high.

In our DC we have been reducing the number of cabinets full of physical servers by virtualizing using VMware ESX hosts. We have emptied several cabinets and "donated" stacks of physical servers. This allows us to make use the hardware we have closer to 100% and this also reduces the number of older, less efficient servers in use.

We do all our virtualization on power and cooling efficient HP blade servers.

In our current DC we purchase green offsets for 100% of our power. In our next generation DC we hope to integrate real green power such as solar.

Very cool brundle. This is the kind of thing we have been seeing. I have a client who has gone from hundreds of physical servers to a few meaty servers running VMWare/ESX. They are saving considerably on cost, as well as admin costs.

Anyone else?

Default DC powered by water current!

Hello All. You should check out this link. It is Google's new patent on a floating DC that uses the tide to power it's facility and water to cool the DC. It sits on the coast, on the water.

That's right boys and girls - a floating DC. Sounds impressive but this is certainly a candidate for Disaster Recovery.

Default Seven Strategies for a Green Data Center

There was great white paper published by the Green Grid called seven strategies to improve data center cooling. You can read about it and down load it for free (no registration required) at: Strategies for Designing a Green Data Center | Virtualization Strategies
I hope this is helpful to you.
